Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a safe and natural approach to good health and well-being that has successfully helped billions of people for over 5000 years. It is a holistic treatment used to relieve symptoms and signs of many health problems, as well as to uncover the root causes of those symptoms. This ancient healing technique works by activating the natural, self-healing abilities of the body, thereby strengthening and supporting the body’s immune system to prevent future illness and disease.

The Science behind Acupuncture

Science has proven that everything is made of, and radiates, an energy that supports and enlivens our physical bodies. Ancient practitioners named this energy Qi (pronounced “chee”). Qi is a combination of energies derived from our air, our food and our inherited physical make-up. These combined energies are necessary for growth, development, movement, immune responses, maintenance of body temperature and overall body regulation. Our health is directly and profoundly influenced by the quality, quantity, and balance of Qi.

Qi moves through the body by way of meridians, or “pathways,” within the body. Qi flows through these meridians as an invisible current, energizing, nourishing and supporting every cell, muscle, tissue, organ and gland. When Qi is balanced and flowing freely, the body’s natural self-healing abilities are activated, enabling internal stability and harmony to occur. When Qi is stuck, blocked or interrupted, the reverse can occur. The goal of acupuncture is to stimulate the blocked areas, allowing Qi to flow freely so that the body can flourish and true health and well-being can be achieved and maintained.

GENERAL ACUPUNCTURE FAQs:

How does an acupuncturist diagnose a patient’s problems and how best to treat them?

Diagnosis is achieved in several different ways:
     1.  Pulse diagnosis – over 26 subtle variations in the quality of the pulse are felt at six different positions of the wrist.
     2.  Looking – a person’s appearance, demeanor and tone of voice, as well as the color, shape and size of the tongue, provide an acupuncturist with vital clues about internal health.
     3.  Asking – By asking questions, information is gathered about past medical history, present health, lifestyle and emotional state.
     4.  Physical examination – Palpation to specific areas and acupuncture points can reveal imbalances.

What causes the flow of Qi to be blocked or interruptedt?

The quality and flow of Qi can be adversely affected by the stresses of daily life, including trauma, pollution, accidents, poor diet, stress, physical strain, bad lifestyle habits, surgery effects and many others.  These kinds of stresses cause blockage in the body’s meridians and thereby interrupt the flow of Qi.

How does blocked Qi cause illness?

Qi is required to nourish and support cells, tissues, muscles, organs and glands.  Affected meridians can block or disrupt the flow of Qi, which can manifest into various signs and symptoms.  Over time, the body as a whole becomes weakened, and its self-healing abilities are compromised.  Eventually it becomes susceptible to pain, disease, and ill health.  Once the problem affecting the flow of Qi has been detected and corrected, self-healing powers within the body begin restoring health and balance to our lives.

How do the needles work to remedy blocked Qi?

Certain points on the body associated with the energy channels or meridians where blockage has been diagnosed are stimulated by the insertion of fine needles.  By stimulating these points, energy imbalances and blockages are removed, allowing for the free flow of Qi to the appropriate areas of the body so that healing, good health and energy can be restored.

I’m hate getting shots so the idea of acupuncture needles scares me.  Do they hurt?

Unlike the hollow hypodermic needles used in mainstream medicine to give injections or draw blood, acupuncture needles are very fine and flexible and are usually barely felt when inserted.  The practitioner will lightly tap the needle into the appropriate point, usually from 1⁄4 to 1 inch in depth. The depth depends upon the nature of the problem, the location of the points selected, the patient’s size, age, and constitution, as well as the acupuncturist’s treatment style.

What if I want acupuncture but I don’t want to use needles?

Dr. Lea Kelley can provide non-needle Microcurrent Color-Light treatments (see below) as an alternative to traditional needles.

Can I get acupuncture and still go to a regular doctor?

Though considered an effective method of alternative healing, acupuncture can also be very effective in conjunction with traditional and modern medicine.  Together they have the potential to support, strengthen and nurture a patient to regain vital health and well-being.

A variety of acupuncture techniques are available:

Traditional Needles (described above)

Non-Needle Microcurrent Color-Light:

For the patient who would prefer a non-needle approach to acupuncture, or simply as a therapeutic alternative, Microcurrent Color Light offers a powerful combination of Eastern technique and Western technology.  Also known as “electro-medicine,” Microcurrent Color Light has been used safely and effectively for decades by medical professionals, including chiropractors, physical therapists, and MDs, in treating injuries and chronic pain and illness.  Microcurrent Color-Light is NOT the traditional milliamp electrical stimulation, but uses far less amperage for more effective, multi-site uses on the body.

- Non-invasive approach
- No side-effects
- No pain
- No downtime for healing
- Holistic
- Safe for chronic problems

Light and color used together have remarkable healing effects on the body

Color is how the body communicates on the cellular level.  Through the application of specially selected color light at targeted acupuncture points, information is fed to the body directly where it's needed to balance the body and affect illness and injury.  Combined with Microcurrent, Color Light works in harmony with the natural energy systems of the body, addressing many of the underlying causes of chronic pain and injury.  Additionally, Color Light can be used alone for sensitive areas or issues.

Auriculotherapy (ear acupuncture):

- Uses acupuncture points on the ears to treat the whole body.
- Another excellent choice for chronic issues or “wear-home” treatment.
- May even be used as SMOKING CESSATION OR WEIGHT-LOSS SUPPORT.

Korean Hand Therapy/Korean Hand Energetics

Korean Hand Therapy (K.H.T.) is a system for awakening the body to health and wellness through your hands.  By stimulating specific points on your hands, you can resolve pain and balance internal organ function. Thus, the overall effect on the body is identical to traditional acupuncture performed using the meridians located directly on the body.

K.H.T. was discovered in 1971 by Dr. Tae-Woo Yoo, O.M.D., Ph.D. in Korea and has been clinically and experimentally tested for accuracy.

K.H.T. includes the entire acupuncture meridian system within the hand.  It is one of several microsystems representing the body just as auriculotherapy is a microsystem representing the body, but it uses the ears.

K.H.T. can use any of the following to stimulate the acupuncture points: tiny acupressure pellets, magnets, heat via moxibustion, miniature acupuncture needles or an electrical point device.  All are available at Dr. Kelley’s office.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is the process of burning a special herb, ai ye (Artemisia or mugwort), on or near the skin on either acupuncture points or areas of  tenderness. This herb is used as opposed to a simple heating device or smoking device because it has the active chemical component called borneol.  Incidentally, borneol can also be isolated in crystal form called bingpian, which is used for its antiseptic and analgesic effects.

Dr. Kelley utilizes the indirect method of applying moxibustion to the body using the following methods:

• a moxa stick that looks like a cigar

• a moxa “pot” or “box” containing loose moxa leaves wrapped in a protective towel for extra long treatments

• tiny moxa sticks attached to a protective cardboard bottom that sticks to the skin (a.k.a. sticky mini moxa)

Uses:

• Pain therapy

• Improves local circulation of Qi and blood flow

• Eliminate diarrhea when used on the belly

• Adjusts the Central Nervous System functions (activation or sedation according the Chinese or  Oriental Medicine theory)

• Promotes the metabolic functions of the body

• Activates the phagocytic actions of some white blood cells and increases certain local white blood cells to an area to fight infection

• Stimulates the production of erythrocytes (red blood cells).

• Increases the immune system’s functions (i.e., eliminating the common cold).

Contraindications:

- Fever
- High blood pressure
- Extremely weak individuals
- Certain skin conditions, especially those with acute inflammation and swelling
- Sensitive areas such as the eyes, face, genitals and the abdomen of pregnant women.

(Note:  Moxibustion on the hand using the Korean Hand Energetics method, is safe for PREGNANCY and for DIABETICS because it uses the hand, not the body points.)
